2. Fort Aguada
Overview of Fort Aguada, Goa
On the Sinquerim Beach, approximately 18 km from Panjim, stands the crumbling ramparts of Fort Aguada, a Portuguese fort built in the 17th century. It is located on the confluence of the Mandovi River and the Arabian Sea. A four-storey lighthouse (which is unique in Asia) and a stunning sunset make the fort a must-see.
This fort was built by the Portuguese in 1612 for protection from the Dutch and Marathas and covers the entire Bardez peninsula on the southwestern tip. This fort is named after the Portuguese word for water, ‘Agua’, and was once a source of freshwater for sailors. In fact, it can hold 2,376,000 gallons of freshwater and was one of Asia’s largest freshwater reservoirs.
A statue in front of the jail salutes the freedom fighters, giving Fort Aguada a touch of patriotism.
How To Reach Fort Aguada
Fort Aguada is located on the Aguada-Siolim Road in Sinquerim, Candolim. There is a footpath that spans 2 km that makes for a steep climb, but it’s an alternate route if you want to avoid renting motorbikes or taxis. The per day fare of a motorbike is between INR 400 – INR 500. However, if you haggle you can get it for an even cheaper price. A valid driver’s ID and a separate identity proof is mandatory for hiring any vehicle.
Architecture of Fort Aguada
Made from laterite stone, which is widely available in Goa, Fort Aguada is a beautiful example of Portuguese architecture. As a magnificent fort built on Bardez peninsula and entirely covering it, it stands tall against water and strong winds. There are bastions on three sides of it, and a gate faces the river on the fourth side.
The upper part of Fort Aguada serves as a fort and watering station, while the lower part serves as a safe berth for Portuguese ships.
Aguada Jail and Lighthouse
On 18th June, a ceremony is held here to salute the freedom fighters of Goa. Part of the Fort Aguada was converted into a jail during the Salazar administration.
The Aguada Fort also has a splendid four-storeyed light house. Built in 1864, it is the oldest lighthouse in Asia. There was a time when oil lamps were used to emit light after every 7 minutes, which was later changed to 30 seconds. The Lighthouse dominates the landscape of the Fort, and it was closed to public gaze some years ago and abandoned in 1976. So, a new lighthouse was built and named as Aguada Lighthouse. A bell inside the lighthouse later became part of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church in Panaji. For a small fee, one can access the top of the staircase from where one can have a beautiful view of the sunset.
History of Fort Aguada
Aguada Fort is a well-preserved Portuguese fort in India located near the Sinquerim Beach. Its construction was started in the year 1609 and was completed in 1612 under Ruy Tavara, the then Viceroy of Goa. Located in the south of Candolim town, at the shore of Mandovi River, the fort was built to defend Portuguese against the Dutch and the Marathas. It was also a reference point for vessels coming from Europe as the lighthouse served the purpose. It was tasked with the defence of shipping and Bardez sub-district in the vicinity.
In addition to the lighthouse, the fort has a moat, gunpowder room, and a secret escape passage in case of war.

The majestic falls are located about 60 kilometers from Panaji on the border between Goa and Karnataka. 310 m high and divided into four tiers, the waterfall is reminiscent of heavy milk flowing down a hill in a heavy rush.
From Panaji and nearby areas, most people arrive at the Dudhsagar falls by jeep or private transport, while others trek to the falls or take a train. While the famous Dudhsagar Railway trek is closed to the public, the trek to the lower falls continues to be open.
The Dudhsagar falls are best visited during the monsoon when the falls are in full flow and the deciduous forests are at their verdant best. However, it is difficult to reach the falls during monsoon and the falls are closed if the water level rises too high.
When is the best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls?
While monsoon or soon after monsoon is the best period to visit the falls, be careful while choosing the trekking routes to Dudhsagar Falls during this season as the area can become quite slippery and with the added hazard of the river swelling up. Please note that while the beauty around the falls is still glorious in summers, falls themselves may not appear in full strength. Therefore, its best to avoid visiting falls during summers.

- If you plan to spend the night near the falls, carry mosquito repellant with you.

- You may need permission if you plan to camp near the falls since they fall within Mollem National Park.
- It is a protected forest area, so please keep it clean and don’t litter.
Dudhsagar Falls Trek
The trek trail starts from the village of Kuveshi. The difficulty level is moderate, but the views more than make up for the distance. It is not ideal to undertake this trek during the monsoon months as the Mandovi river, which crosses the trail, gets quite rough and swollen during those months.
It takes around 6 hours to complete this relatively easy trek. Another trekking route starts from the Kulhem/Collem railway station and stretches for about 11km. As the course began to walk along numerous railway tracks, it would also pass through some of the most significant sites, including Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary.
This trail, however, starts at the Castle Rock station in Karnataka and runs for about 14 km, following the railway tracks and tunnel passages as well. As one approaches the waterfall, a gush of greenery and a tint of the waterfall can be seen. No matter which route you choose, you will pass through some beautiful sights like streams and greenery.
